Diabetes has recently become a large-scale problem in the world today. It is characterized by high blood sugar, or lack thereof. The causes aren't exactly known, but a new study suggests that soda is a key factor in many children who have the disease.
Non-diet sodas are often hailed as something to be consumed sparingly, now more than ever. They are already linked to obesity for sugar content, and now are linked to diabetes from a recent study. More than 91,000 women were followed for a total of 8 years, and striking results were uncovered. The women who drank diet soda were at no more risk that other people to acquire diabetes. Alarmingly, the women who drank regular soda were at much more risk to obtain diabetes than the average person- suggesting the sugar content is responsible.
The soft-drinking youth of today's world won't likely give up sweetened soda anytime soon- which explains why many of today's youth are getting diabetes at younger and younger ages. Many schools have already banned soft drinks, and many more are on the way from this recent study.
This will likely show a large decrease in sales for soda companies, who will now have to find optional ways to put in sugar for sodas, or focus attention on diet sodas from the recent studies. The matter is more serious than many think, affecting more than 200,000 youth. Hopefully, the bans will help lower the number, and encourage youth to drink more healthier drinks.
